Red River Gorge Geological Area has over 100 natural sandstone arches hidden inside its 29,000 acres of cliffs and forests. It’s the second-largest concentration of arches in the country.

German food is at every corner of Helen. The problem is figuring out which one to eat at. A line wound out the door for Hofer’s German bakery, where chocolate cakes and cream puffs stuffed the display case. We escaped with a pretzel and bier cheese to eat on the front porch.

Backpacking with kids is its own rollercoaster. Some trips go better than others. The parents who’ve figured things out mostly did it through trial and error, us included. After digging through online communities, a few common threads emerged.
